Fee-for-service (FFS) means the state pays your doctor or other healthcare provider directly for your care.
Everyone who is eligible for Medical Assistance is initially on fee-for-service coverage. Sometimes people refer to this as "straight MA". If you are not eligible for a managed healthcare plan, you'll stay on MA fee-for-service, and you must go to a doctor and other providers who take MA.
In this section, see common questions about fee-for-service coverage.
You can use the Minnesota Health Care Programs (MHCP) Provider Directory to find health care providers that serve fee-for-service members. You can also call Health Care Consumer Support at 651-297-3862 or 800-657-3672 for names of healthcare providers or to confirm if a healthcare provider is enrolled with MHCP.
All healthcare providers are required to provide interpreter services. When you're on fee-for-service, if you need an interpreter, you can request one when scheduling your appointments.
You can request, at no cost to you:
Sign language interpreter services
Spoken language interpreter services
Interpreter services delivered at medical appointments or phone calls made while trying to access healthcare services
Yes. Fee-for-service can help pay for rides to and from medical appointments. This benefit is called non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT).
You may get mileage reimbursement or other ride options if you don't have a car or can't drive. Contact your county or tribal office to see if your ride is approved.
