E1MN training

Basic training for all roles

Guidance for supervisors

Supervisors of roles in the E1MN partnership have an important responsibility to help staff build the knowledge and skills needed to support people on waivers with employment.

Supervisors can easily add the “Basic training for all roles” to new staff training and ongoing staff professional development. As you consider ways to incorporate the training, keep in mind you can assign staff pieces of the training over time; you do not need to do it all at once. Begin with the responsibilities and activities that are most critical for your staff.

The training for each responsibility has three sections that encourage staff to:

  • Learn: Readings and videos to engage staff in learning the topic.
  • Reflect: A short quiz to reinforce the learning.
  • Do: Activities staff can do to practice what they’ve learned.

Whether you supervise waiver case managers, VRS/SSB staff, wavier employment service providers, or VRS/SSB employment service providers, you can use the ideas, guidance, and tips on this page to help your staff become experts at the responsibilities that all roles in the E1MN partnership have supporting people on waivers with work.

The training can be used for a variety of purposes including onboarding new staff and professional development for current staff.

Prior to debriefing an activity with staff:

  • Complete the steps under Learn for the assigned responsibility,
  • Complete the activity you assigned to staff,
  • Then review the answer key to prepare for debriefing.

The answer key for each activity can be found in the accordions below on this page.

Have new staff complete the steps under Learn and the activities under Do for all four responsibilities in this path. With new staff, use the answer key for each activity to review the correct answers, discuss questions they missed, and point out key takeaways.

Recommendation: Budget 4–6 hours for staff to complete the steps under Learn and the activities under Do for all four responsibilities in this path (about 60–90 minutes for each responsibility).

Have current staff complete the steps under Learn and one or more of the activities under Do for one responsibility. At a staff meeting, use the answer key for each activity to review the correct answers, discuss questions they missed, and point out key takeaways.

Recommendation: Start with the first responsibility in the path, Implement Employment First, then assign each subsequent responsibility in chronological order for the next three staff meetings. Budget 5-10 minutes to debrief an activity during a staff meeting.

Have current staff complete the steps under Learn and the activities under Do for one responsibility a week until they have completed all four responsibilities in this path (4 weeks to complete). Schedule a meeting to debrief all four responsibilities in this path with staff. At the meeting, use the answer key for each activity to review the correct answers, discuss questions they missed, and point out key takeaways.

Recommendation: Plan for 60 minutes to debrief all the responsibilities in this path, approximately 15 minutes per responsibility.

Supervisor tips:

  • When assigning this activity, ask staff to jot down on a piece of paper the answer they chose for each question.
  • Complete the self-assessment and the agency assessment. Read the feedback for Yes, No, and Unsure responses to prepare for reviewing and reflecting with staff. For each question on the agency self-assessment, identify specific actions your agency has taken, is currently taking, or plans to take. The agency assessment is a great way to get staff up to speed on the ways you are supporting competitive integrated employment.
  • When reviewing with staff, open the self-assessment and agency assessment on your computer, tablet, or smart phone for reference. Ask staff to share the questions they answered “No” or “Unsure”. Discuss the feedback for those responses provided in the assessments in the Work Toolkit and help staff create a plan for changing their No or Unsure response to a Yes.

Answer key: Assessment question answers are included with the assessments:

  • Question 1: (a) or (c)
Working offers new experiences and opportunities to build new skills. Working can open doors for future opportunities, and can help pay for more of the things you want to do.
  • Question 2: (a)
If you work, you'll earn more money. You can use the extra income to meet your needs, whether it's paying your bills or paying for things that are important to you — like hobbies or a trip.
  • Question 3: (a) or (b)
If the issue is not enough money to go out, then the solution work provides is more money to be able to go out. If the issue is lack of relationships, then the solution work provides is more social interaction. Most people work during the day. It can be hard to find other things to do or to make social connections when family, friends and neighbors are all working. The more you work, the more natural connections and supports you will have. You can use work as a way to meet new people, make new friends and stay connected with your community.
