How to advance in a job

Does the youth understand the concept of job advancement and know what steps to take to advance at work?

Remind youth that they can use their skills to achieve new career goals and find more challenging job opportunities. Advancement may happen within the same company or career field, or by moving from one job to another.

  • Awareness: Understand how to seek advancement in employment settings.
  • Exploration: Identify strengths, preferences, interests and needs for advancement on the job.
  • Preparation: Practice using appropriate sources for job advancement.
  • Implementation: Use skills for job advancement.

  • The Career Advancement Guide from Coursera reviews the basics of career advancement, including how to work toward the type of progress that aligns with a person's career goals.
  • Indeed's How to Advance in Your Career in 10 Steps article/video discusses what career advancement is and provides a guide for how people can advance in their career.
  • Harvard Business School offers insights on How to Jumpstart Your Career with an overview of paths to take, common challenges and the best ways to get started.

Find resources to help youth advance in a job.

Review the Career Advancement Guide from Coursera, and then talk with youth about how to approach their own job advancement.
